Not long after World War II, my Oma left Holland and sailed to Australia. That was my maternal family’s sliding door moment. My grandparents settled with several Dutch families in Wollongong’s Northern suburbs, and my mother was the firstborn child of four. What they didn’t comprehend at the time was that this place - Dharawal Country - had already been inhabited for thousands of years.

My father was born in the rural west of New South Wales. He was the first baby born in his local hospital, built on Wiradjuri Country; a fact he was never taught.

Although I was born into this beautiful area, and feel a strong soul tie to the Illawarra, I acknowledge the wrongs of my ancestors and the damage they caused to the Indigenous peoples of this place and Australia more broadly. In particular, I extend my deepest respect and admiration to the First Nation’s People of the Dharawal and Wiradjuri Countries, and their Elders, past, present, and emerging. May we be allies in connecting the people of the Illawarra to this beautiful land. Thank you dearly for the care and love you have shown to this place for thousands of years.

That time the iconic local publication - the Illawarra Flame - decided I was worthy of a business feature (with a big thanks to the wonderful Amanda De George!).
